Each year, thousands of individuals do take the step of reporting their rape to the police and undergoing a rape kit exam. This invasive forensic examination of a victim’s body typically takes four to six hours to complete and is a testament to their hope for justice. And yet, hundreds of thousands of times, a decision is made by law enforcement and prosecutors not to process the kit for DNA evidence. It is estimated that there are hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits across the United States.
On Wednesday, June 1st, our San Francisco Bay Area Committee held its second TALK SF event focused on the rape kit backlog. Hosted by committee member Amy McNamara and her husband, Michael, the event gathered 45 individuals to discuss the appalling number of untested rape kits across the United States and delve into Joyful Heart’s advocacy work to enact reform on local, state, and federal levels.

On November 5th, Joyful Heart held our first TALK event in San Francisco at the home of Beth and Anthony Armstrong. The theme of this discussion was building support for holistic healing opportunities for survivors and healers. It was also an opportunity for Joyful Heart to share—for the first time—our initial findings from our ongoing research project to evaluate the impact of our signature retreat model and develop a replication plan for national dissemination.
For 78 days, we've watched four courageous women take on a national movement—literally—to end sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. Calling themselves States on Skates, this group has skated 2,800 miles across 8 states to bring light to the issues and raise funds for the Joyful Heart Foundation. After hearing about their adventure I was captivated by their journey but after experiencing firsthand Gracie, Brenna, Beth and Kim’s spirit and passion, I am absolutely in awe of their resolve and dedication to spreading hope nationwide to survivors and advocates.
"Violence and abuse is everywhere and has deep and lasting impact. And yet these are issues that—for the most part—we don’t talk about. What that means for survivors [is that] they are trapped in silence and feel alone and ashamed. And what that means for those who are violent and abusive [is that] they are not held accountable. We want to change that. That is what tonight is all about. We want to encourage conversation, deepen our understanding and inspire action." This is how LA Committee Member Jenny Belushi opened TALK LA on a November evening in Brentwood, and what we talked about that night with more than 75 members of our Los Angeles community.
