Heal the Healers

Self-Care Practice for Sustainable Work

There are times when the impact of vicarious exposure to the suffering of others can be overwhelming. These feelings can build as therapists and other healers work on the frontlines of trauma work as well as for those who play supporting roles. Over time, the impact of vicarious trauma can take a toll on a healer's mind, body and spirit.

At Joyful Heart, in addition to our work with survivors, we are committed to supporting those who work with the populations we serve. We have witnessed the impact of vicarious trauma and we have also seen the benefits of incorporating a daily self-care practice. This daily practice gives healers an opportunity to reconnect with themselves, learn to be more present in both their personal and professional lives, and can make it possible to work with trauma survivors in a sustainable way.

Incorporating a Daily Practice into Your Routine

There are a number of regular self-care practices that you might consider exploring. To learn more about the benefits of some of our featured modalities, follow the links below:

Tips for Immediate Stress Relief

While a regular practice can help you do you work over the long term, if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by your exposure to trauma, here are a few simple tips for addressing the immediate impact:

  • Make yourself a cup of tea, or a soothing warm drink.
  • Take some time away from your office or workspace and go for a walk.
  • Spend time talking with a trusted friend, colleague or family member.
  • Enjoy a few minutes in quiet meditation or another mindfulness practice
  • Take a moment and focus on your breathing. Pay attention to the rhythm and depth of each breath.
When the work day is complete, you might consider doing the following:
  • Take a bath.
  • Spend time with a favorite pet.
  • Workout, exercise helps to increase your body's production of endorphins that help you to feel better.
  • Read a favorite book.
  • Write in your journal.
  • Find a creative outlet- music, painting, writing poems, etc.
  • Prepare and enjoy a healthy meal
