Supporting Male Survivors
1 in 6 men have had unwanted or abusive sexual experiences in childhood. That's 21 million men. Men are victims of other forms of sexual and domestic violence as well.
Engaging men—both men who are survivors and men who are bystanders to violence—is a crucial part of the movement to address, prevent and end violence and abuse.
The New NO MORE Male Survivors PSA Series
The video and print series from Joyful Heart, 1in6 and Viacom specifically addresses the harmful myths and excuses that male survivors hear: That sexual abuse can’t happen to guys. That they just need to get over it. That guys wouldn’t “let” that happen to them. They invite men who have experienced unwanted or abusive sexual abuse in childhood, and those who care for them, to visit 1in6.org for help. View the entire campaign here.
Joyful Heart works with the 1in6 to distribute informational material to individuals, agencies and campuses throughout the country. You can view and download these materials below. If you’d like to requestprinted copies, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Joyful Heart also features a guest blog from 1in6 each week to raise awareness of how individuals and communities can become further involved in these issues and connect to resources.
Joyful Heart is proud to the 1BlueString campaign from 1in6. We ask guitarists to help us spread the message of hope and healing by stringing a blue low E string on their guitars. 1in6 provides the string, and the artist provides the powerful and life-changing message to survivors that they are not alone. Six strings on a guitar, one of them blue: one in six.
Guitar strings are available to anyone who’d like them. To order your string, visit 1bluestring.org. Watch the 1BlueString video, narrated by Joyful Heart board member Peter Hermann.
