The California Model: Strengthening the Statewide Response to Sexual Assault
April 2, 2026 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm EDT
In this webinar, Hillary Larkin, PA‑C, and Adrian Berg present a decade‑long technology initiative that is now in use across California to standardize and strengthen the sexual assault medical forensic exam. The session highlights how this digital platform improves the quality, clarity, and consistency of forensic documentation while supporting greater health equity for patients statewide.
Larkin and Berg describe how placing the entire medical forensic exam on a unified, secure platform allows examiners throughout California to document findings in a consistent format, protect sensitive patient information, and securely transmit reports to law enforcement, crime laboratories, and advocacy partners. The system also facilitates real‑time, patient‑centered warm handoffs to victim advocacy services, ensuring survivors are connected to support without delay.
A key component of the technology is its ability to maintain a transparent and standardized list of collected forensic evidence kits. This statewide tracking function enhances compliance with California sexual assault kit testing laws and eliminates the longstanding challenges associated with monitoring kit backlogs. By bringing together standardization, secure data exchange, and evidence‑tracking transparency, the platform represents a major step forward in improving the quality of forensic care and the systems that support survivors.
