Discussion questions for Joy Is My Justice

Part 1:

  • Have you done the Deeper Why exercise? If so, what surprised you? 
  • When has toxic positivity been harmful to you? In hindsight, when have you used it with someone else?
  • What broken systems are disrupting your Joy practice at this time?
  • What family or cultural story may be limiting your capacity for Joy? 
  • When is a time in your life that you resonated most with the concept that trauma lives in your body? 
  • Have you thought of a ground rule for Joy that feels true to you?

Part 2:

  • Do you feel a difference between saying “Why me?” and “Why not me?” Can you describe it?
  • Is there a way you are getting stuck in the pile-on and creating resistance to a challenge? 
  • How can you stay accountable to yourself in making a change while still remaining compassionate? 
  • What if you all take a few diaphragmatic breaths together? 
  • How does it feel different before and after? 
  • What kind of movement brings you the closest to Joy?
  • What do you think of this concept of there being no false hope? 
  • Can you commit to one kind of gratitude practice this coming week?
    • A gratitude letter
    • Gratitude journal daily for 1 wk 
    • Thanking a challenge daily 
    • Using “gratitude recasting” 
  • What role do ancestors play in your life? 
  • Is it easy or challenging for you to give grace to yourself?

Part 3: 

  • What is one time you felt comfortable in the unknown?
  • What were you in awe of today? 
  • What was one thing of beauty you saw today? 
  • Do you have faith in Joy? 
  • What is your first response to feeling fear? 
  • Do you relate to trying to find a sense of purpose in life? If so, what’s yours (today)? 
  • Give one example of your resilience .
